General Motors
General Motors selected Barton Malow Company to build the Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center, a first-of-its-kind facility in Warren, Michigan. The center is a two-story, 300,000 SF R+D facility located at GM’s historic Technical Center campus, which will help the automaker advance its future in electric vehicles (EVs).
Named after Bill Wallace, a GM director who played a pivotal role in the development of the automaker’s advanced battery technology and trained many of its current battery leaders, the new facility was designed with the future in mind. It incorporates flexibility to bring in new technology as it emerges, allowing GM to remain ahead of the curve as it revolutionizes the industry. An Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) approach was utilized to offer the flexibility and collaboration needed to deliver this iconic building on campus.
The building supports manufacturing, testing, and logistics of battery cell production. It will help advance GM’s vision to pave the way for the widespread adoption of EVs, building on more than a decade of advanced battery development.
