The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a U.S. Department of Defense program, has recognized Barton Malow Company Senior Project Manager Tara Uhl with the Patriot Award. This commendation reflects the efforts made to support citizen warriors through a range of measures, including flexible schedules, time off before and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed.
Barton Malow Company Senior Project Engineer Max Wineland nominated Uhl, his manager, for the award, citing broad support for service members and veterans among his team that allowed them to succeed simultaneously on the jobsite, within the call of duty, and at home.
“In my eight years in the reserves, this is the first time I’ve submitted an employer for this recognition,” Wineland said. “Many places talk a big game about supporting their veterans and reservists, but Barton Malow actually does it!”
The Barton Malow Family of Companies offers benefits and programs aimed at helping armed service members, veterans, and their families. Barton Malow offers competitive paid military leave for participation in a military reserve or National Guard unit for active duty or to attend training. The Barton Malow Veterans Team Member Network, formally launched on Veteran’s Day 2021, is a place for military veterans — active, separated, and retired — and their families to share stories and perspectives, and provide advice and information on resources.
“Without the support of an employer, it can be hard for people to spend a week or two away on deployment or summer training,” Steve Houston, LIFTbuild Senior Director, Veterans Team Member Network creator, and a veteran himself, said. “I know for a fact that for everyone I’ve engaged with, Barton Malow’s support for those who serve is one of the things they appreciate most about being here.”
