Barton Malow Senior Community Engagement Specialist Katie Gandy has been named a 2021 Rising Star by News/Talk 760 WJR and the Detroit Economic Club, a program that annually recognizes Detroit’s emerging leaders. Katie is among 10 Rising Stars in the 2021 class.
“I’m honored and humbled to be named a Rising Star, and grateful to work with such a talented Community Engagement team every day,” Katie says. “I’m excited about the progress Barton Malow has made with our various programs and initiatives and look forward to continuing to grow them to make a positive impact on peoples’ lives.”
Katie joined Barton Malow as a Senior Payroll Analyst in 2016 before transitioning into a Community Engagement role. Today, she supports initiatives such as the Barton Malow Boot Camp, a six-week program that works to expose youth to careers in the skilled trades and offer sustainable employment opportunities with either Barton Malow or its subcontractor partners. In 2020, the Barton Malow Boot Camp saw its largest enrollment yet, with 92% of participants completing the program and 77% of participants earning job offers.
Katie also works with career tech education partners to recruit and educate underserved residents on careers in construction, provides access to supportive services and grants for apprentices to remove barriers to success within the skilled trades, and partners with HR to implement strategies that will increase engagement of women and minorities in the skilled trades.
In addition to her work at Barton Malow, Katie serves as the Treasurer of the Detroit Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC).
