Barton Malow’s University of Michigan Biological Sciences Building (BSB) was among six projects honored by a 2020 Build Michigan Award by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Michigan. The BSB team was presented with the award at AGC of Michigan’s Annual Meeting, held Friday, February 21 in Plymouth, Michigan.
Barton Malow was also recognized for its commitment to safety. Additionally, Elizabeth Kavanagh was awarded with the AGC’s Apprentice of the Year honor in the Operating Engineer category.
“The Build Michigan Awards represent the most outstanding commercial construction projects completed in our state each year,” said Eileen McCarthy, AGC Board Chair. “These projects help revitalize cities, improve our economy, and contribute to our daily quality of life.”
The BSB is a state-of-the-art building that includes research laboratories, associated support functions, offices, and classrooms for the University’s Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; and museums of Anthropology, Paleontology, and Zoology.
Laboratories within the building were constructed to allow for greater collaboration, increased flexibility, and better space utilization. The new, three-section building is connected by two large glass atria. One atrium serves as the lobby for the new Museum of Natural History, and visitors to the Museum are able to see and interact with exhibits representing university discoveries and learn about current and ongoing research efforts.
Barton Malow was also among 50 construction organizations recognized for its continued commitment to employee and workplace safety, earning a Silver Michigan Outstanding Safety Performance Award in the Division V category for firms that have logged more than 500,000 work hours.
Elizabeth Kavanagh was named Operating Engineer Apprentice of the Year, an award that recognizes her work to advance construction in Michigan. Also honored was her mentor, Mark Zinser, of OE Local 324 Training Center.
Apprentice award recipients receive a $1,000 check co-sponsored by the AGC of Michigan’s Workforce Development Committee, Michigan Carpenters Apprenticeship & Training Fund, Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) Local 2, Michigan Laborers Training & Apprenticeship Institute, Ironworkers Local #23 Training Center and Operating Engineers 324 Apprenticeship & Training Fund.
