LANCASTER, PA – The Harrisburg office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Barton Malow Alexander, a joint venture between Barton Malow and Alexander Building Construction Co., implemented an OSHA Strategic Partnership during the construction of the Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center. The goals are to reduce injuries and illnesses, continue to increase safety and health training, ensure effective health monitoring is conducted, and increase the number of employees with safety and health management systems. This partnership encourages cooperation between OSHA, Barton Malow Alexander, and contractors to foster a safe work environment.
“Partnerships with OSHA allow us to work towards the common goal of reducing worker injury and illness. We’re thrilled to enter this partnership for the health and safety of workers at one of our largest active job sites.”
-Darren Rech, Safety Director at Alexander Building Construction Co.
This partnership aims to create a working relationship that focuses on preventing work-related injuries and fatalities, eliminating serious workplace hazards, and establishing a foundation for the development of an effective safety program. The program will be administered through the implementation of Barton Malow Alexander’s Site-Specific Health and Safety Program, which includes COVID-19 guidelines. Partners will meet quarterly to review injury and illness statistics from the Lancaster Medical Center project and work together to resolve workplace safety and health issues.
Construction of the new, 340,000-square-foot acute care facility will feature 129 private patient beds, an Emergency Department, physician offices, specialty inpatient services, imaging lab, and complete medical and surgical capabilities for Penn State Health. Approximately 600 workers will be employed at the peak of construction and the Lancaster Medical Center is expected to open to patients in late 2022.
OSHA’s Strategic Partnership Program (OSPP) is a national program that provides opportunities for OSHA to partner with employers, workers, professional or trade associations, labor organizations, and other interested stakeholders.
