BUILDING INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS

Barton Malow Company was excited to add this fast-moving, high-adrenaline Colossal Curl water slide ride to its resume of recent theme park experience. No twists were left unturned when SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment made the decision to demolish the existing Gulf Scream slide and replace it with a 70-foot tall, 622-foot long, 293,000+ pound waterslide within the 30-acres of the Adventure Island water park in Tampa, Florida!

To avoid disruption to the park and its visitors, all construction took place during Adventure Island’s annual shutdown period, which occurs during the winter months. Demolition of the existing slide as well as new foundations and pedestals took place in the last quarter of 2014. Excavation for the new water vault/pump yard and erection of the new slide tower also began towards the end of the year and continued into 2015.

As 2015 progressed, the slide continued to take shape (and color) and was ready to make its action-packed debut on March 4th when the media was invited to come out and experience the excitement of the new thrill ride! The Curl begins with a 114-step climb to the top of the tower.  Riders load into a clover-shaped raft that pushes off for a 42-second whirlwind trek to the splash tub waiting at the bottom.  The slide includes twisting and turning through spacious tubes, getting blasted with water spouts throughout, and hitting the steep roller-coaster-type drop which propels you straight back up the giant wave wall, designed to give riders a feeling of weightlessness.

Thrill seekers were not left disappointed by the slide that now stands as the tallest ride in Adventure Island. The Colossal Curl made a big splash when it opened to the public on March 7th and the positive reviews are continuing to slide on in! Visit the park to see for yourself and #ConquerTheCurl!
